Families and friends can book out the National Trust villa for a holiday
Sometimes all that’s needed to recover from a stressful work week is a lovely weekend away. There’s no need to hop on a plane to enjoy a gorgeous break from reality, either, as the UK is home to some truly stunning locations.
One such place is Dorset, the seaside county on the south coast of England that has pretty beaches, beautiful countryside, and plenty of opportunities to relax in nature. Nestled in the hills is Portland House, a National Trust property that’s full of history – and it’s possible to book it out for the weekend.
Priced at £2339 for three nights, the 1930s art deco-style house sleeps twelve across seven bedrooms, making it ideal for a weekend getaway with family or friends.

Portland House sits high on a slope overlooking Portland Harbour, with wide views of the sea and sky. Surrounded by terraced gardens and palm trees, the bright white house stands out against the blue water. It also is said to have a classic 1930s look, with large Crittall windows and original features inside like the kitchen, bathrooms, and light fittings.
With room for twelve guests across seven bedrooms, the house is spacious and elegant. Most rooms open onto two large terraces, perfect for enjoying the sun and sea views. It’s just outside Weymouth, close enough to walk to the shops, beach, and harbour, but set in a quiet spot. From here, travellers can explore the Jurassic Coast, go fossil hunting, or visit local landmarks like Hardy’s Cottage and Corfe Castle.
If this isn’t the staycation for everyone, there’s also the Berry Farm Cottage in Bridport for £614 for the same length of time – Friday to Monday – in June on Airbnb. The cottage can hold up to four guests, has two bedrooms, three beds and two bathrooms. It also has alfresco dining and outdoor seating which is great for summer trips. Another option is The Granary for £468 from Dorset Hideaways which is a charming and attractive two-storey barn conversion and features high ceilings with exposed beams.
Although there are no reviews for Portland House on the National Trust website, shoppers have shared their experience on Trustpilot on the brand. One customer said: “I think that the National Trust does an exceptional job under such stressful circumstances.”
Another said: “Great places to walk and visit across the country with family, friends and dogs. Just remember parking can be busy in summer.”
“We have been booking the holiday lets for the last few years now,” another said. “The last 3 holidays have been in The Old School House and Powders in the Helford Passage and Wireless Cottage. Each of these have been in absolutely fantastic natural settings and in perfect condition… I would highly recommend it.”
Not everyone agreed with this however and one customer said: “Unfortunately I don’t think I’ll be renewing my membership as it’s not worth the money for me.”
Another said: “It’s disappointing when visiting National Trust properties, that there isn’t enough information to tell visitors what they are looking at.”
However, for a unique staycation in a historic home, Portland House could be the perfect choice for a cosy, wholesome getaway.
