‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’ Netflix Sequel Adds Elizabeth Debicki and Scott Caan

David Fincher’s next project is continuing to round out its cast, while story details remain scarce, with those involved in the production keeping information on the plot and production close to the chest. The surprising announcement that Fincher would be directing a sequel to Once Upon a Time… In Hollywood from a script written by Quentin Tarantino took many by surprise. Tarantino is infamously protective of his written works, though Brad Pitt has helped in the transition of creative leadership for the still-untitled movie. Two more actors have now signed on to the project, though the types of characters they will be playing remain unknown.

According to an exclusive report from The Hollywood Reporter, Scott Caan and Elizabeth Debicki have signed on to David Fincher’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood sequel, starring alongside Pitt. Caan had previously worked with Pitt on The Ocean’s Eleven trilogy, and Debicki is best known for her award-winning performance in the Netflix series The Crown, and James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy movies. As previously mentioned, details about the film and the characters the actors will be playing are unknown, with one source telling THR that “this film is more secretive than Star Wars.”

The latest promo for ‘F1’ is an unexpected homage to one of the greatest anime movies ever made.

A source listed in the THR article would also suggest that Debicki’s role could be either that of a bar owner and operator of a mud wrestling establishment or another role described as a “trophy wife.” Brad Pitt’s Cliff Booth will be at the center of the untitled movie, chronicling his continuing adventures in Hollywood, though the decade the film takes place in is still a mystery.

The number of unknown variables in the upcoming project makes it incredibly interesting, especially since a sequel has never been made to a Tarantino-directed project before without him behind the camera. It’s well known at this point that the filmmaker wants to retire after making his 10th film, and it seems that Tarantino put the script for this film aside to avoid having a sequel be his last feature film. Questions still remain, such as whether Leonardo DiCaprio, Margot Robbie, or any other actors from Once Upon a Time in Hollywood will make an appearance in the project, or if the movie will utilize any of the fictional histories that Tarantino created for characters like Rick Dalton and Cliff Booth.

The Once Upon a Time in Hollywood sequel doesn’t have a set release date, though THR states in the report that production is aiming for a start in July. Moreover, the movie will be produced and released by Netflix, as the studio signed an overall deal with David Fincher. The streaming platform has released Fincher’s past two films, Mank (2020) and The Killer (2023), as well as his television show Mindhunter. Hopefully, the project will receive a wide theatrical release, despite being produced by a streaming service. However, in the past, Tarantino has been very vocal in his distaste for streaming movies – going so far as to say they “almost don’t exist” during an interview in 2023 – making the whole project even more incredible to me moving forward.

The rumored July production start date for the Cliff Booth sequel film could mean that more story details will come to light, such as the time period or the involvement of other actors in the production. The unprecedented sequel is an exciting collaboration and will give film fans the chance to experience a Tarantino script through the lens of another filmmaker. The fact that David Fincher is bringing the screenplay to life will only help generate more excitement, and it will be interesting to see who else gets cast in the upcoming movie.
