On May 31, Saram Entertainment released the first stills of Girls’ Generation’s member and actress Choi Sooyoung in her Hollywood debut film ‘Ballerina,’ drawing the attention of fans worldwide.
The upcoming action thriller Ballerina is set during the timeline of ‘John Wick: Chapter 3 Parabellum’ and follows the story of Eve Macaro, played by Ana de Armas, who begins her training as a traditional assassin within the Ruska Roma organization. Choi Sooyoung takes on the role of Katla Park, the daughter of a Ruska Roma ally.
Katla Park is a ballerina who performs at a dance club and becomes protected by Eve Macaro. The newly revealed still shows a scene set in the club where Katla makes her appearance, heightening anticipation for her character. Earlier, Saram Entertainment had also shared a video interview with Sooyoung on their official Instagram.
“In the fight scene that takes place in the club, Katla Park appears during what becomes a turning point for Eve Macaro,” Sooyoung said. “It is the moment when Eve begins to realize her identity as an assassin. I felt that Katla and the scene itself are very important to Eve’s journey.”
Reflecting on her first impression of the script, Sooyoung said, “Although it is an action movie, I was especially drawn to the story because it explores the relationship between a father and daughter. I truly love my family, and to me, they mean everything. That emotional connection made the story even more meaningful for me.”
To better understand her character, Sooyoung created a personal backstory for Katla. “I imagined that it was Katla Park’s birthday, and from a career standpoint, this day represented a major turning point when her dreams were finally coming true. It was a day full of reasons to celebrate,”
she explained. “She probably believed that only happiness and success awaited her. Creating this background helped me express her fear, her will to survive, and her complex emotions.”
Speaking about her co-star Ana de Armas, Sooyoung said, “She was such a kind person and made me feel like I was truly part of the team. As an actress, what impressed me most was her complete immersion in her role. That dedication is clear in all of her previous work as well.”
The film ‘Ballerina,’ featuring Choi Sooyoung, is set to premiere in the United States on June 6 and will be released in South Korea in August.
