Addison Rae Channels Britney Spears as She Performs in Lingerie at Star-Studded N.Y.C. Album Release Show

Addison Rae is proving herself as a pop superstar in the making.

The “Diet Pepsi” singer, 24, took over iconic nightclub The Box in New York City on Thursday, June 5 for a live performance in partnership with Spotify to celebrate the release of her debut album, Addison, out now.

Attended by stars including Conan Gray, Julia Fox, Richie Shazam, Clairo and Jade Thirlwall, the event was unlike many other branded pop-up performances, where the artist often simply gets up on stage to sing a couple of songs. Rae delivered a high-concept production complete with multiple costumes, intricate choreography with five dancers and reimagined versions of her tracks.

She took the stage around 9:45 p.m. in a standing set piece resembling a bed to sing “Fame Is a Gun.” Midway through the track, two dancers pulled the bedsheet off Rae, who appeared nearly nude in lingerie with her hands and feet bound by rope — later removed, so she could dance to the track.

Next, Rae was given a vintage-style microphone to perform a jazzy rendition of “High Fashion” reminiscent of how Britney Spears reworked her hit “…Baby One More Time” into a cabaret version on 2004’s Onyx Hotel Tour.

She left the stage after “High Fashion” to change costumes while her creative consultant, choreographer and close friend Lexee Smith appeared in front of the crowd to read a poem. Then, Rae reemerged in an aptly colored dress to perform “Aquamarine.”

The next song in the set was “New York,” followed by “Diet Pepsi,” for which Rae wore denim shorts and a white top and asked fans to sing along, as the hit song “started it all” in her album cycle.

Concluding the show, Rae performed an encore of her new single “Times Like These,” surrounded by dancers wearing bras and denim — which felt like a nod to Spears’ rebellious 2007 M+M’s Tour of nightclubs.

At the end of the set, Rae’s dancers brought glasses of champagne on stage for a toast “to the beginning.”

“Thank you for being here with us tonight,” said Rae. “Now, go get drunk and have fun!”

The event marked Spotify’s latest N.Y.C. event with a major pop star, following recent ones with Miley Cyrus and Lady Gaga.
