Trace Cyrus Slams Billy Ray Cyrus for Not Attending Tish Cyrus’ Mother’s Funeral in 2020

NEED TO KNOW

  • On Tuesday, June 10, Trace Cyrus claimed his father Billy Ray Cyrus skipped his then-mother-in-law’s funeral five years ago
  • Billy Ray was previously married to Tish Cyrus, before she filed for divorce in 2022
  • Tish’s mother, Loretta Finley, died in 2020 at the age of 85

Trace Cyrus is calling out his father, Billy Ray Cyrus, for skipping an important family gathering five years ago.

On Tuesday, June 10, Trace posted a series of Instagram Stories, making claims about his father. Trace, 36, and Brandi, 38, are the children of Tish Cyrus. Billy Ray adopted the two in 1993, and later welcomed three children with Tish: Miley, 32, Braison, 31, and Noah, 25. The “Achy Breaky Heart” singer also shares son Christopher Cody, 33, with Kristen Luckey.

In his Instagram Stories message on Tuesday, Trace said Billy Ray “is so hungry for fame it’s pathetic.”

Trace continued, “He really flew to Italy for a fashion show but wouldn’t come to LA for Mammie’s funeral while he was still married to my mom. Even after his daughter got him a $60k private jet like he demanded.”

Tish’s mother, Loretta Finley, died in 2020 at the age of 85. Tish, 58, divorced Billy Ray, 63, in 2022.

A rep for Billy Ray had no comment on the claims.

“You’re the lamest man ever to walk planet earth,” Trace continued, “Honestly embarrassed to have ever considered you my idol 🤡.”

“The best thing to come from your downfall is it made me go into beast mode. I refuse to be a washed up, delusional, evil person when I’m old like you,” he wrote. “Get right with God. You need it.”

He then took a screenshot of his Instagram Stories post and shared it to his profile, with just “🤡” as the caption. He turned off the comments.

Trace also mocked his father’s signature long hairstyle. “And why does he think that homeless hairstyle looks good? So weird,” he wrote.

The young musician included a screenshot of an Instagram user’s comment, saying Trace’s social media activity “seems like a cry for help from a son that desperately needs attention from his father. Bullying him isn’t the answer btw.”

But the snap also included Trace’s direct response: “No, I’m past the point of even caring if I ever speak to him again. I’ve surpassed him in every metric as a man on this planet. There’s nothing left to learn from [him] except from his mistakes.”

“I had hope at one point but I’m convinced he’s finally a lost cause. I’ll continue to thrive as the oldest son of the family the Cyrus last name will continue through me and my many children I plan to have. I will raise them the right way and be a part of their life no matter what the circumstances are.”

This isn’t Trace’s first time calling out Billy Ray. In January, he penned an emotional open letter to the Billy Ray on Instagram, claiming that he and his sisters had been “genuinely worried” about Billy Ray for years. He wrote that since his “earliest memories,” all he can remember was “being obsessed” with his dad and thinking he was “the coolest person ever.”

Two days later, Braison spoke positively of his father, saying that he’d spent the last year “getting to know my dad better than I ever have.” He then issued a statement to PEOPLE, saying he has no ill will toward either his dad or siblings amid the Cyrus family’s apparent strain.

Billy Ray also replied to Trace’s January comments in a YouTube clip of the music video for his 2009 track “Somebody Said a Prayer,” which featured Trace.

“Praying for the brokenhearted and their pain,” Billy Ray captioned the clip. “Praying for my family. For my children … sons and daughters…and their mother. Let this moment be the start of healing ❤️‍🩹 for us all. ‘The past does not equal the future.’ Amen 🙏🏼.”
