Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos was on hand to honor comic/TV host Ricky Gervais with the 2,813th star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame May 30 in Los Angeles.
The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce administers the Walk of Fame for the City of Los Angeles and has hosted the star ceremonies since 1960.
It was Netflix that helped Gervais, who co-created the original “The Office” comedy series for the BBC in 2001, establish himself in the U.S. streaming market with a series of shows, including “Extras,” “Derek,” and the critically acclaimed “After Life”.

Sarandos, in a social media post, said that in 2012, Gervais sent him an email to say that he thought Netflix was the next big thing and he wanted to bring his next project to us.
“I sent him one back that said ‘we will take it!,’” Sarandos wrote.
The executive said that Gervais’ comedy series, “Derek,” was Netflix’s first digital deal.
“It was a hit, nominated for Emmys and Golden Globe Awards,” Sarandos wrote.
The executive said Gervais has also made three comedy specials and two original films, Special Correspondents and David Brent: Life on the Road for the streamer. A fourth comedy special and animation project are also in the works.
“I was proud to help celebrate his receiving a star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame. A richly deserved honor for a comic genius,” Sarandos wrote.
